Cherry Blossoms & Springtime in Seoul

Cherry blossoms are a big deal in South Korea. Decisively marking the end of the long, often harsh winters that brace the country, the blooming flowers bring back interest in the outdoors. A very visual manifestation of the life spring brings back, everywhere is instantly transformed. It’s no wonder everyone gets so excited about them…

Every April cherry blossom festivals take place all across South Korea, notably along Seoul’s Han River (Hangang) where trees line the streets of Yeouido. Now I have to admit, I would use the word “festival” lightly. Essentially, this is just the area where half of Seoul congregates to admire the flowers and over a couple of weekends it is barely possible to walk along. However, it really is a beautiful sight and if you can head over on a weekday, you are in for a treat. It’s also worth considering wandering over to one of the palaces in central Seoul, where the flowers add an extra beauty to their grounds too, or indeed often down any street blessed with Sakura trees.

You can find a long list of the cherry blossom festivals taking place in South Korea this spring here – in Yeouido it will be the second and third weekend in April.

As a former Seoul resident, so many things make me homesick for Korea and thinking of how dramatically spring unfolds over there is certainly one of them. It was always a delight too to see lanterns appear, strung up above the pavement and adding even more colour, to celebrate Buddha’s birthday (which coincides with springtime). So it seemed an ideal time to share this and some photos of my springtimes in Korea.Seoul Cherry Blossoms, South Korea Seoul Cherry Blossoms, South Korea Seoul Cherry Blossoms, South Korea Seoul Cherry Blossoms, South Korea Seoul Cherry Blossoms, South KoreaYeouido Cherry Blossom FestivalDo any seasons bring back memories for you?

The Sunny Southeast of Ireland

With today being St Patrick’s Day, I thought it would be ideal to save this post for today. Due it’s non-veggie credentials, I won’t be celebrating with a Guinness but it is a perfect opportunity to reflect on my growing love for the Emerald Isle.

Being half Irish I’ve had a natural curiosity to learn more about where many of my ancestors are from for a long time. We visited family in Dublin regularly as I was growing up but it is usually very different revisiting somewhere as an adult (that is probably a topic for a post of its own!) My eagerness to see more of Ireland has happily been helped along since my dad moved back to his homeland not so long ago.

In 2013, I made three trips over and have another one on the horizon next month. Seeing some of the Irish countryside and exploring some of the smaller towns has been wonderful. My dad’s house is in a rural location, to say the least, down in County Wexford. Also known as the “sunny southeast,” I’ve been blessed with gorgeous weather each time.

Dotted with picturesque little towns, a sandy coastline, and lush green fields this is beautiful part of Ireland. Foodwise, I have to give a special mention to Katy Daly’s in Gorey (the nearest proper town to my dad’s house) which has welcoming staff and a couple great veggie options – last October whilst in Dubrovnik I got talking to an Irish couple from this region and it was the first thing we both had to say about Gorey!

Happy St Patrick’s Day! Have you ever visited Ireland? What is your favourite part of the country?

Little Treats #3

Musical Taster

This week saw the release of Wild Beasts’ new album after almost three years of anticipation. Guitars have been eschewed in favour of synths whilst the vocals remain as key a feature as ever. If you’re not familiar with Wild Beasts I’d hugely recommend checking them out. Here’s a little peek, though I have to admit I’m not too sold on the video yet:

Seeking Spring

In my opinion, March is always much longer and colder than anyone expects. It nearly always snows in March. Since I can’t quite rely on it being spring just yet I’ve at least made my room feel a bit more like spring with these lovely daffodils. They’ve cheered me up every time I catch a glance.

Winter Holidays

I’ve just returned from a little trip to Iceland and still haven’t quite got over what an incredible place it is. Once I’ve had chance to sort through my hundreds of photos I’m planning a sort of blog “takeover” where I’ll share the highlights… and most importantly, the food.
